Aircraft History

Designed to accommodate one or two pilots and up to four passengers, the helicopter is celebrated worldwide for its reliability and an outstanding performance across various demanding environments. With its inaugural flight in 1967, the Bo 105 remained in continuous production until 2001, making it one of the longest-produced light helicopters in history. As the world’s first twin-engine light helicopter, it represented a major leap in rotorcraft technology, offering increased power, enhanced high-altitude performance, greater speed, and higher payload capacity than its single-engine counterparts. Its dual-engine configuration also provided an added layer of safety. What truly sets the Bo 105 apart is its hingeless, rigid rotor system – a ground-breaking innovation in helicopter design. Its four-blade rotor is mounted directly onto a single milled titanium block, eliminating the need for hinges and significantly improving control responsiveness. This system grants the helicopter unparalleled agility, enabling it to perform aerobatic manoeuvres such as loops and rolls – an incredibly rare capability in civilian helicopters. Thanks to this, the Bo 105 became a staple of airshows and aerobatic displays, further cementing its iconic status. Powered by two Allison/Rolls-Royce 250-C20B turboshaft engines, each producing 420 horsepower, the Bo 105 excels in high-altitude, high-temperature, and high-performance flight conditions. Its power-to-weight ratio gives it remarkable climb rates, precise hovering capabilities, and rapid directional changes, making it a preferred choice for operators who demand speed, agility, and reliability.

The Bo 105 set new standards in light helicopter design, influencing future generations of aircraft. Even decades after its introduction, it remains one of the most respected helicopters ever built. Whether performing life-saving rescue missions, thrilling airshow crowds, or supporting tactical military operations, the Bo 105 continues to be a symbol of engineering excellence, inspiring helicopter enthusiasts and professionals alike.
